at the mfa we also saw more murals by john singer sargent, including the above piece, hercules and the hydra. i am learning that you can’t swing a dead cat (not sure why you would want to do that anyway, ew) around here without hitting one of his paintings, which is endlessly pleasing. we theorized that jss simply snuck into places in the night and painted their ceilings where he felt they were lacking.
according to his wikipedia page, sargent painted approximately 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors in his career, so i am sure (and i hope) that i will continue to come across more pieces that i have not seen before.

andy and i went to the mfa this morning, and while the tomb 10a exhibit was so-so, they had a small collection of harry callahan’s prints on view that i was very taken with. there were some gorgeous dye-transfer color prints, but the exhibition also had wonderful high contrast black and white photos, including the piece, eleanor, above (and yes, that is a photograph). i love coming across great photographers and artists that i have never heard of before in their rotating exhibits.
